What are Breast Implants Made of?

May 14, 2018 | Breast

When considering a breast augmentation, you may be wondering—what are breast implants made of?

Breast implants are used during a surgical procedure to increase the size of the breasts and there are many different types. Breast implants are typically made of either saline or silicone. Each plastic surgeon has their preference when it comes to breast implants, but I use Mentor breast implants in my practice because of their superior safety aspects. During your breast augmentation consultation, we will review these options fully before making a decision as to which type of breast implant would best fit your needs and body type.

Here are the different kinds of implants I commonly use in my practice:

Saline breast implants are sterilized salt water encased in a silicone shell. Saline breast implants are firm and uniform in appearance.

Structured saline breast implants are similar to traditional saline breast implants—saline solution encased in a silicone shell— the only difference is that these also contain an inner structure to give the implant a more natural feel.

Silicone breast implants are the most popular type of implant currently because of the natural feel of them. These breast implants are a viscous silicone gel encased in a silicone shell.

Gummy bear breast implants are form stable—meaning that they will maintain their shape even if the implant has ruptured. The silicone gel inside of the gummy bear implant is thicker than regular silicone implants, making them slightly firmer to the touch. Gummy bear breast implants are shaped to mimic the contour of a natural breast, with more projection at the bottom of the implant and tapered towards the top. Because of their anatomical shape, this type of breast implant is preferred by women with less breast tissue prior to their breast surgery, as well as transgender women.

Round breast implants are either silicone or saline encased in a round silicone shell, and they give the upper pole of the breasts a fuller appearance. Because round implants are uniform in shape, if the implant rotates after being placed in the body, it will not be noticeable.

Smooth breast implants are either silicone or saline encased in a smooth silicone shell, which is soft, making them more mobile within the breast pocket. Smooth breast implants move with the body more naturally.

Textured breast implants are either silicone or saline encased in a slightly textured silicone shell, which causes scar tissue to form and adhere to the implant, making them less mobile inside of the breast pocket. This reduces the amount of movement overall, making them less likely to rotate once they have been placed.

During your breast augmentation consultation, we will determine which type of implant will be used during your breast augmentation. Contact us today to book a consultation.
