When Should You Replace Silicone Breast Implants?

Apr 21, 2018 | Breast

Breast implant replacement is a common question for a variety of reasons.

Some women feel after having implants for a long period of time they would prefer just to remove them. I always tell patients that breast implants are not intended to last forever. The FDA recommends replacing of breast implants as they are not lifetime devices. We normally advise patients to begin thinking about exchanging them around 10-15 years after placement. I try to see and examine my own patients every year that they have implants and they are encouraged to come in if they are ever concerned about anything.

Another reason why a breast implant may be removed and/or replaced is during a breast revision surgery. Breast revision is where a breast implant is removed due to a botched previous surgery, or because there are complications with the implant such as capsular contracture, or a rupture.

With silicone implants, it is recommended to have regular check-ups with your plastic surgeon to make sure the implants are functioning correctly. Because of the cohesive nature of the silicone gel, a rupture in the implant may not be detectable without an exam.

The best way to assess your silicone breast implants and give true advice about potential removal would be an in-person consultation. Schedule your consultation with us today!
