Breast Implants Before And After: Everything Expected to Change After Surgry

Woman Covering Breast Photo

According to a recent survey, 98% of women were completely satisfied with their breast augmentation results post-surgery. For complete satisfaction, it's important to do your research before you make your surgical appointment. Learning about your breast implants before and after will ensure you are comfortable and happy with the results.

Undergoing breast implant surgery can feel both exciting and intimidating, and the post-surgical results go far beyond the physical difference. Most patients report an improvement in self-confidence and quality of life after breast augmentation.

Before undergoing the surgery, it is important to know that the procedure itself is just a small portion of it, as the recovery does take several weeks. Knowing what to expect after breast augmentation will help you with your recovery timeline and ensure satisfaction for years to follow.

Doctor Jaimie Schwartz is a board certified plastic surgeon in Beverley Hills California. He is the founder of the Beverly Hill’s Breast Institute and is a top surgeon for breast augmentations. In this article, we will cover breast augmentation before and after, so you feel well prepared for the future.

Follow the Postoperative Instructions For Best Results

Before leaving Doctor Jaimie Schwartz’s office, you will have specific postoperative instructions given to you by the staff. It is important to follow them precisely as this is the most vulnerable time of healing which leads to maximal results and more longevity of your implants.

Depending on the incision site, size, type of implant, and genetics, that will determine how long your recovery period is.

As exciting the feeling of your new implants may feel, it is imperative to limit your movement post-op as long as instructed to so that the implant has time to settle.

Incision Site and Scarring

There are three main incision sites and each one will yield a different result in terms of your scarring. Depending on your lifestyle and aesthetic goals, you and Doctor Jaimie Schwartz will make that decision prior to the surgery.

Transaxillary

This is when your surgeon inserts the implant through the armpit. The transaxillary method is not typically the preferred incision of choice, as if it does not heal well it can cause visible scarring.

Inframammary Fold (IMF)

This is the most preferred method for breast implant placement, with a lower chance of complications such as capsular contracture and loss of sensation in the nipples.

Because of the direct access to the location of the implant, there is less chance of scarring and much easier to camouflage the incision site.

Periareolar

This is where the incision is between the lighter skin of the breast and the darker skin of the areola. Because of its location, there is a higher risk for scarring if it does not heal well. It also has an increased risk of capsular contraction and loss of nipple sensation.

Scarring has a lot to do with genetics as well, so keep in mind that if your body has a tendency to regrow thicker skin, you will scar a bit more. Your surgeon will go through all of the details and help you make the best decision for your body.

How the Implants Will Feel

The feeling of fuller, smooth and realistic breasts, you will be amazed by the sensation and feel of your implants. However, the type of implant you decide on will determine the feel of your breasts.

There are three main types of implants, and you may want to look at pictures of breast implants before and after to get an idea of what you want.

Saline Breast Implants

Saline implants have some advantages such as safety and a much lower cost. If the implant ruptures, the solution is natural to the body, which is the same as an IV solution.

Going with Saline can have some risks such as more rippling, may not feel as natural, and higher rupture and capsular contraction rates.

Silicone Implants

Although they may seem slightly more expensive, the silicone implants have a much better advantage over the saline choice. They look and feel incredibly natural as they are in a desirably natural shape.

If you have little breast tissue to work with, this would be the ideal choice for you as they are more round and create a desirably fuller breast.

Gummy Bear Implants

These implants are perfect for people who are going under reconstructive surgery or have less than an A cup size breasts. They do not lose their shape and they feel completely natural, with a desired "teardrop" breast shape.

Both the silicone and gummy bear implants have less of a chance of capsular contraction or rupturing, which makes them a more popular choice of the three.

How the Implants will Look

The placement of your implants will determine their appearance and overall look. There are two options for placement;

Subglandular position

This placement is not suggested as it is more obvious and will appear more like water balloons on your chest than breast implants.

Submuscular

Submuscular is the most common choice in the USA for implant placement. For the most natural appearance, it is best to choose submuscular placement.

There is a lower risk for capsular contracture, and if you have little breast tissue to start off with, they appear more natural being underneath the muscle.

Emotional Responses Before and After Breast Implants

Studies have shown that people who were feeling insecure about being flat chested (macromastia), or asymmetrical breasts who decided to get breast implants to have incredible emotional responses.

The incredible results have shown a much higher rate of self-confidence, body confidence, and a healthier lifestyle. You cannot put a price on the feeling of looking into a mirror and liking what you see.
