Also known as a breast augmentation, breast enlargement, or breast implants, a boob job is a procedure where a breast implant is placed is inside the breast pocket to fill out the breasts. A breast augmentation can increase volume in small breasts, correct asymmetries, and give deflated breasts firmness and a nicer shape.
During your breast augmentation consultation, exact measurements will be taken of your chest. Proper sizing for your implants is important to creating the most realistic looking breasts possible. We use a precise measurement system with 3D imaging to determine your perfect size, without going too small or too large, so that your breast augmentation will fit your body’s proportions and complement your figure. The result is breasts that you could have been born with.
During your breast enlargement surgery, small incisions are made in an inconspicuous area of the body to minimize visible scarring and the breast implant is inserted into the breast pocket. Incision types include: peri-areolar (around the areola), or IMF, inframammary fold (under the crease of the breast), and will depend on the type of breast enlargement surgery being performed and the body type of the patient. For instance, if the breast enlargement surgery is being performed at the same time as a breast lift, then the incision pattern may be more complex. As a general rule, I tend to prefer the IMF or inframammary fold incision for breast augmentations as a stand-alone procedure, because it lessens the risk of losing nipple sensation.
Breast implants may be placed in several ways depending on your individual body type and needs. Placement options include sub-glandular (beneath the glandular tissue, but above the pectoral muscle), or sub-pectoral placement (beneath both the muscle and the glandular tissue). The advantages of each type of implant placement will be fully discussed with you during your initial consultation, and the proper treatment plan will be determined.
The best candidates for a breast augmentation with implants are women who want a significant increase in volume, usually a cup size or greater. Some candidates for this type of breast enlargement have undergone a mastectomy and/or breast reconstruction. This is also a preferred method of breast enlargement for transgender women, which is known as a top surgery.
Breast implants should not increase cancer risk, or impact the ability to breastfeed.
