Liposuction Overview

Liposuction is a surgical procedure used to sculpt and define the contours of the face and body by removing unwanted fat deposits. In general, liposuction works by suctioning or scraping out fatty tissues from the body to sculpt and define areas such as your upper arms, calves, knees, thighs, and face. Dr. Jaime Schwartz has been performing liposuction surgeries for many years, giving him an expert's view of how to shape and contour your body to meet your individual goals and needs.

Signature Techniques

Tumescent “Super-Wet”

Tumescent liposuction or "super-wet" liposuction involves injecting large volumes of fluid, which is a combination of saline and a local anesthetic, into the targeted treatment area before suctioning out the fatty tissues. Clients that would benefit from tumescent liposuction typically have larger areas being treated such as the abdomen, hips, or thighs, and are looking for smoother results with minimal pain.

Depending on the areas being treated with liposuction, this tumescent fluid allows Dr. Schwartz to perform the surgery using local anesthesia only, or IV sedation (TIVA), which speeds up your recovery time significantly.

Suction-Assisted Liposuction (

In suction-assisted lipoplasty (SAL) Dr. Schwartz uses a small diameter tube or cannula to suction the fat and fluid by moving the tube in a gentle fashion in and out of the fatty area while also constantly feeling the suctioned area to compare thickness and smoothness. Clients that would benefit from suction-assisted liposuction typically have a smaller volume of fat being removed, and want a more precise, sculpted result.

During your liposuction consultation, Dr. Schwartz will review the different liposuction options and together you can form a plan of treatment that makes sense for you.

How long does it take?

The length of your liposuction procedure may range from a few minutes (facial) to several hours for large extremities such as the thighs. The length of your procedure and the type of anesthesia used will be discussed in your consultation with Dr. Schwartz.

During/After Surgery

After surgery, you will likely experience some fluid drainage from the small incisions. Dr. Schwartz may fit you with a snug elastic garment to wear over the treated area for a few weeks to control swelling and to help your skin better conform to its new contours.

Dr. Schwartz will give you instructions for showering and changing the dressing, and you’ll be seen in the office for a follow-up in a few days after surgery. Healing is a gradual process, and Dr. Schwartz recommends that you start walking and moving around as soon as possible to reduce swelling and to help prevent blood clots from forming. You will begin to feel better after about a week or two, and you should be back at work within a few days following your procedure.

Liposuction FAQs

How Safe is Lipo?

Your safety is of utmost importance to Dr. Schwartz. Although liposuction is generally safe, the risks may be increased when liposuction combined with other surgical procedures or if there are large areas being treated. These risks will be discussed with you prior to your surgery during your consultation with Dr. Schwartz, so you can make an informed decision and embark on your treatment with confidence.

Is it Permanent?

Liposuction is usually very effective and long lasting, and can be permanent if weight is maintained after the procedure. If you gain weight after having liposuction, it is possible the fatty tissues may reappear and an additional liposuction procedure will be necessary to restore your original results.

How Much Fat?

Liposuction is not a weight-loss tool, but it can be successful for removing stubborn areas of fat that have not responded to your best efforts at exercise and weight loss such as saddlebags, a double chin, or love handles.

Combination procedures?

Liposuction is often used in combination with other cosmetic procedures such as lifts (arm lift, thigh lift, back lift etc.), a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), or a breast reduction. Liposuction can also be used to treat some medical conditions like gynecomastia (male breasts) and lipedema, or to remove benign fatty tumors.
