overview

Clients that would benefit from cosmetic ear surgery may have overly large ears that stick out, asymmetrical ears, or ears that are misshapen and cause them discomfort and embarrassment. Having an appearance that you are comfortable with can positively impact your self-esteem, especially when it comes to ears.

Ear reshaping surgery (also known as otoplasty) is a cosmetic procedure that can help redefine the size and shape of the ears and create a more pleasing appearance. Dr. Jaime S. Schwartz is a plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills, CA who has helped many adults and children to face the wold with confidence in their appearances.

No matter what the concern, an otoplasty with Dr. Jaime S. Schwartz can give you aesthetically pleasing results so you can face the world with self-assurance.

Ideal Candidates

Ear surgery can be performed at any age; however, it is extremely common among children and is recommended before reaching elementary school. By 6 years of age, this surgery is safe and effective to be completed on a child. If you feel embarrassed by the appearance of your ears because they stick out or are too large, otoplasty may be the ideal treatment to achieve a more normal appearance. Sufferers of a damaged earlobe from piercings or stretching may also be good candidates for cosmetic ear surgery.

Surgical Technique

Cosmetic ear surgery is performed using a form of anesthesia called TIVA, which stands for total intravenous anesthesia. In most cases, the incision is placed discreetly near the back of the ear or hidden within the inner ear folds. During this procedure, cartilage may be removed or added to create a more natural appearance. It is usual for each ear to be addressed during otoplasty to make sure they appear balanced. Once the ears are surgically corrected, the incisions are closed with sutures and are bandaged so they can remain protected.

What to Expect

Once treatment has finished and you are released to leave the surgical center, you will rest and recover at home. Dr. Schwartz or a member of his team will give you complete and detailed recovery instructions. If the patient is a child, it's very important for them not to touch, pick at, or scratch their ears. Furthermore, your child or you should not lay on their ears, rather sleeping in an upright position for the first several days. Dr. Schwartz will ask to see his otoplasty patients back within the first week — at this time, Dr. Schwartz will remove the bandages and look at you or your child's surgical results. The outcomes are noticeable right away and the progression of results will continue to improve as the ears heal.

Reshape Your Ears

Even if your ears are not very big, an abnormal shape, position, or size may make a huge difference in your appearances. Ear surgery (otoplasty) may help a child with misshapen ears avoid getting teased from classmates or help an adult feel more comfortable socially. Contact Dr. Jaime S. Schwartz in Beverly Hills, CA to schedule a consultation and get more information about surgical ear reshaping.
