Why Consider Calf Augmentation

Every part of our body has an “aesthetic norm” which when developed shows the beauty of the human body. One of the most difficult to sculpt and define are the calf muscles. Many clients seek out Board Certified Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon Dr. Jaime Schwartz to enhance underdeveloped or asymmetrical calves whether for aesthetic or medical reasons.

The calves consist of 2 different muscles. The larger and more superficial is known as the gastrocnemius which has two heads that come together to create a diamond shape. The soleus is a flatter muscle that lies deep under the gastrocnemius.

Calf augmentation is focused on creating more definition and adding size to the gastrocnemius.

Aesthetic Reasons for calf augmentation

The calf is an area of focus for men and women due to the fact that enhances the silhouette of the leg.

Women wear high heels to lengthen the leg and show on more attractive definition. They prefer to enhanced the calf muscles in a longer, slimmer fashion and may even prefer to just enhance the medial portion. This can be accomplished with implants that may be placed just medially (inside) or both medially and laterally (inside and outside). Others prefer natural fat transfer which can lengthen the muscle definition and placed in specific areas to augment that leg.

Men prefer to enlarge their calf muscles to show more width as well as bulk to their calf muscles. Most men have calf implants placed both medially and laterally (inside and outside). Some also add fat grafting if needed.

Calf Implants Technique

During calf augmentation surgery using an implant, the legs are measured to determine the suitable size and shape of implant to use. The incision is then created in the natural line of the fascia, the fibrous tissue that covers the outer muscle. A special instrument is used to create a "pocket" between the fascia and the muscle, which is big enough for the implant insertion. Implants are typically inserted into the muscle, and the area is reshaped until the desired size is achieved. Because the muscle covers the actual silicone device, the calf looks and feels like real muscle. The wounds are then closed with stitches and once they dissolve, scarring is minimal due to the discreet location of the incision.

Calf Fat Transfer Technique

Fat transfers are used to add volume to almost any area of the body. When used to enhance the calf, Dr. Schwartz uses liposuction to remove excess fat from unwanted areas, such as the thighs and abdomen and then prepares the fat for a transfer to the thighs. As Dr. Schwartz injects the healthy fat tissue, he uses a gentle massage technique to place the fat in the appropriate area to ensure a shapely and smooth outcome. Fat transfer is great since the areas to enhance can control and are not limited to the calf muscles.

About the signature approach

Clients that want more defined or dramatic calf shape may be candidates for a calf implant.

What to Expect for recoveRY

For patients who undergo a fat transfer, during the first few days after your calf augmentation procedure-there may be swelling both in the area where the fat was harvested and the areas where it was injected. The swelling will dissipate over the next few weeks, and the final results will be visible at six months after your procedure - a completely natural looking calf enhancement.

Calf augmentation surgery using implants normally takes about an hour per leg and is performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia or IV sedation. After surgery, especially during the first week, crutches are required until the patient can stand and walk slowly. When lying down, legs should be elevated in order to reduce the swelling. A stretching regime will be prescribed that helps the legs get adapted to having the implants in place. Once the first week is up, the patient can walk longer and at greater distances. The results are a shapelier, curvier lower leg that can last for many years.

Calf Augmentation FAQs

Benefits

A calf implant augmentation can increase the size of the calves, eliminating the need to hide that part of your body. Having shapely calves that are proportioned to the rest of your body can result in greater freedom of clothing choices, increased self-confidence, and a better overall body image.

will i have Scars?

Because calf augmentation uses liposuction to transfer the fat, no incisions will be made. There will be no scarring. Even those who undergo implant surgery will most likely not see any scarring because of where the incisions are placed.

How Long Will it Last?

Fat is living tissue, so it will graft onto existing cells in your body. Most clients retain 50 – 70% of the fat from their calf augmentation procedure. If a greater enhancement is wanted, subsequent fat transfer procedures can be performed until the desired result is achieved. On average, the results from a fat transfer can last up to five years.

The results from calf augmentation with implants, just like with any other cosmetic surgery that uses implants, can last for approximately 10 – 15 years. However, once the patient ages, a shapelier calf may no longer be desired if it does not remain proportionate to the rest of the body. In some cases, patients can opt to have the implant removed if they wish.
